Here are the two varieties of this type: embossed striking on the left, and flat striking on the right. It took me quite awhile before I could tell these two varieties apart. Significant differences are only found on the obverse, as far as I know.
The first thing I look for is the end of the chain going around the rim on the right: the flatly-struck type ends differently than the embossed type. It ends on a longer segment, but it is very short compared to that of the embossed type.
Secondly, with the flat type, the tip of the cross of Tsar Mikhail's crown touches the raised circle which is much flatter than that of the embossed type, whereas the tip of the crown doesn't quite touch the circle of the embossed type. Also, the angles of the crosses are slightly different.
Thirdly, the short segments in the rim's chain design are somewhat larger on the flat type. The short segments on the embossed type are more like little dots.
