15 Roubles, 1897 (unique year)

Here are the two different types of 15 rouble coins that I own. Both are so-called “large head” varieties. All of the “small head” varieties are really pattern coins and extremely rare; only the Kazakov catalog lists them as such, however.

The “СС” type has the legend on the obverse extending past the neck of the portrait by just two letters, whereas the “ОСС” type (sometimes called “РОСС” type) extends by 3-1/2 letters. These correspond to the Kazakov catalog numbers 63 and 66 (the latter is the somewhat scarcer “wide rim” variety).

Kazakov 63 / Uzdenikov 0321 / Severin *562(.)

Uzdenikov does not distinguish between the different large-head varieties, merely between large and small head. Severin lists only two large-head varieties, whereas Kazakov lists three.

Album: “CC” Type, wide rim

Kazakov 66 / Uzdenikov 0321 / Severin *559

It is interesting that Severin gives the “OCC” variety a dot (scarce), whereas it is actually the most common of four varieties shown by Kazakov. This “CC” variety has a wider rim than the other “CC” type and is somewhat more scarce according to Kazakov.
